What's in Our Candles

Most candles found in stores and in homes across the country are made with paraffin wax and metal core wicks. They're popular because they’re affordable, easy to find, and often beautifully packaged. But many people aren't told what these ingredients actually do.

Paraffin wax is a petroleum byproduct. When burned, it can release volatile organic compounds like benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde. These are the same compounds found in diesel fumes and cigarette smoke. They can pollute indoor air, aggravate asthma, trigger headaches, and cause sinus pressure or respiratory irritation, especially in enclosed spaces. Metal core wicks, often made with zinc or tin, contribute to the concern by releasing trace metals into the air during burning.

That’s why, at Orlando's Homestead Candles, we choose soy wax and untreated cotton wicks. Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, a natural and renewable resource that burns cleanly and more slowly than paraffin. It produces far less soot, which helps protect indoor air quality and makes the flame gentler on lungs. Our cotton wicks are free from chemical treatments and metal cores, so they burn steadily without releasing harmful substances into the air.

We also take pride in how Orlando's Homestead Candles perform. Whether the scent is soft and subtle or bold and full bodied, each one is crafted to match its identity. And when it’s meant to fill the room, it does so with warmth, clarity, and purpose.

Above all, we believe that what you breathe matters. Our ingredients are chosen not only for their performance but for their purity, so you can enjoy your space with peace of mind knowing you’ve made a healthier choice for yourself and those you love.
